Read the nonfiction book that inspired The Wire. It depicts the real-life
detective upon which the character Freamon is based. The book is "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets". The author, David Simon, was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and was allowed to shadow the Baltimore homicide police for a year.
Simon went on to create The Wire.
