It is hard for some teens to open up to others because it makes it more real
They would just love to be able to 'ignore' it in some settings to make those situations as 'normal' as possible. But she will find incredible support if she chooses a small 'team' that will support her. I couldn't think of a better person than the dive coach since she personally has experienced a parent with cancer. But maybe she is leery because her former coach passed and I'm sure your kid doesn't want that to be the outcome and maybe by sharing feels that could open up that possibility. Coaches can be a godsend and can be incredible influences in kids' lives. Glad at least someone knows (best friend), but teens rely more and more on peers and 'mentors' than parents and family, so it would be nice if there was at least 1 or 2 others since her best friend could get a little burned out if she is helping carry the emotional load alone.
