It’s not a question- If the Suns make a playoff run, it’s a disaster for us.
I understand that being able to sell that you were on the staff of a top NBA team this last season would be a decent sales pitch… but who’s KY going to be selling that to?

The transfer portal closes May 1st. That’s a week and a half from today.

The NBA finals are slated to start early June and could go as late as June 23rd. The Suns making the finals would be a catastrophe, as nearly every player will have made a commitment by that time. And if the Suns are in the finals, KY would likely double down on making that his priority.

As a reference, 3 offseason ago, Noah Waterman committed on June 27th. Waterman was a very late add as Pope struck out on a couple other bigs. Noah was even already verbally committed to St Bonaventure before withdrawing his commitment. And this was with a portal that was open for entry 15 DAYS LONGER than it will be this offseason.

Even if the Suns JUST make the 2nd round, KY will not be free of his duties until approximately 2 weeks after the portal close date.

First priority is assistants. We really, really need assistants. But I also want KY to be able to actually have time to identify the best fits… so… there’s another reason we need him free of his duties with the Suns.

But even if we DO get assistants all lined up, we are still at a huge disadvantage. Yes, “your coach is coaching in the NBA playoffs” is a pretty good excuse as to why he’s not meeting with you, but 9 times out of 10 that player is going with the head coach he’s met in person multiple times.

With all that said, and as a Phoenix native, I say…

Twolves in 4 baby.
