is that a normal thing to do, transfer types as you get near retirement?
is the downside of switching is that you'd get taxed on all the gains now, at a higher rate than when you're retired (assuming your rate will go down in retirement)

For some people there is a window between retirement and when rmds kick in. You'll have lower income
