by stepping in when he did.
Imo, Pope was clearly the best possible hire among our very limited hiring pool in 2019 — at least among those who were willing & wanting to take the job.
(I tend to think he was the best of those that were offered, though I'm sure plenty would disagree on that. And fairly so, maybe.)
