They don’t make all that much to start with and many have spent a ton of years in study earning their PhD. They have to produce data to earn grants. If they don’t produce data or they don’t produce THE data their sponsors or interested parties are looking for, they won’t get paid and they could even lose their job.

It seems incredibly ripe for fraud and falsification of data. This story is obviously disappointing.
