That sucks, sorry to hear. A lot depends on the tools available.
I would try to use hammer and screw driver to open it up or even cause ridges to allow socket to grab.

If you have some kind of power saw, start to do the same. Not a big loss if you end up having to lose or replace the screw.

I drove around for probably 4-5 months with one less screw until I had a chance to replace it.
