I think he could have made it work. Refraining from calling fans racist without
cause is a good start. It's also helpful in general as an athlete if you're not super involved in politics. You're always going to offend someone. To take as strong of stances as Donovan did and get upset when there's the inevitable pushback is incredibly naive.
