I was in your place a few weeks ago, and I called my mechanic to get his take on
a couple SUVs I was considering. Like Toko said, there are a lot of good options in the class, but he told me he's had a lot of problems with Chevy Equinoxes and Ford Escapes the last 3-4 model years.
