I'll share some personal history.
My son, for whatever reason, decided to do the drug/rob to pay paul culture. I went to the police when I found that he had stolen quite a bit of money. They were the ones who told me that he was into meth and were waiting for more charges in order to put him away. I was told it takes at least a year w/o any stimulants to get off of it, but that 90% remain addicted. It rots your teeth. Can give you heart, liver, kidney and lung problems. Insomnia and paranoia are not uncommon.
We are fortunate that 12 years later he is no longer addicted to meth, but cannabis is a favorite friend which he uses to control his bipolar disorder. I can say that he is always gainfully employed, although no GED or training behind him. He's made some poor decisions and has 7 felony convictions. This means that he can never be bonded, vote, have a passport, get federal loans for school, join the military or a few other things. His were for distribution, which is considered about the worst.
Drug addiction changes your life and the lives around you. He feels like a loser today and is struggling to get ahead. His employers like him. He doesn't like me too much probably b/c I held him accountable. I will say that years later, he told me that I did the right thing. At the time, I was just trying to save a life and keep him in county versus state prison.
Use this if it will help someone else. BTW, I told him that this would be his outcome and he didn't care at the time. Hardest decision I've ever made as a parent.
