BYU has never been competitive when it comes to food... even for 'full scholarship athletes'. It was around 2018 that they dropped the number of meals they fed athletes down to '1 swipe a day' (i think maybe to help offset the costs they were paying out in stipends/cost of attendance to some athletes). Some sports will feed 3 meals DURING the season (for football this includes spring/fall camps)... but off season it's just one swipe.
For comparison... The UofU will give any athletes (walk-on to full ride) 3+ meals per day from the athlete-only Cafeterias 365 days a year. (like the one in the Eccles Football Building). Don't get me started on the number of nutritionists BYU has compared to other schools (it's almost non-existent at BYU).
Helaman doesn't allow cooking in the rooms and only has small 'basement kitchenettes'. For an athlete, this makes it almost impossible to 'eat healthy' and get the fuel they need for their sports.
Most athletes at BYU stay away from the dorms. It's cheaper to live with other athletes and share the costs of meal prep and cooking.
