There's a huge mall w/ an IKEA near it. Maybe check and see how much an uber would be to drive you. That would use your time best. We've gone on our way some place else (Siena or Florence) so didn't worry about returning to Rome. It's certainly worth the trip even if just visiting the grounds and visitor center.
