....and he was responsible for much of BYU's success in recruiting instead of Pope, including getting Chandler to commit. As a result there was a bunch of angst on CB that Chandler was going to follow Burgess to Utah.
Seeing how things have played out with Pope's last 2 yrs at BYU and now at UK and then Burgess the past 2 yrs up at Utah I think we can put to bed the myth that Burgess was the recruiting genius on staff. Doesn't mean he doesn't have good relationships built in state with different coaches at high school level but I keep hearing people on podcasts (like Gman and RWeaver III) attribute him big-time recruiting chops in-state and that his coming to BYU will all of a sudden lock up recruiting in the state of Utah for BYU. We didn't have that advantage before when he was at BYU and we didn't see Utah gain that upper hand when he took the assistant job there. Not sure there's any evidence or anything factual to support the claim that we'll now lock up in-state recruiting.
He's a solid coach and will be good to have working with our bigs and he brings good experience to the coaching staff and maybe my fav reason....it is bugging the crap out of yewt fans that he jumped ship and has them in an uproar.
