If you are only going to one location, I’d take a train. If you plan to visit
multiple locations, then I prefer a car.
One benefit of having a car that a lot of people overlook is that they are a convenient place to store your stuff instead of carrying your gear with you everywhere

If you do rent a car, don’t speed. France has camera cops all over the place
