Depends on the type of grass… there’s no keeping Bermuda or other grasses that spread by rhizomes out.
Even with metal edging and mulch I still have to beat back zoysia and Bermuda from my garden beds

Is there a safe way (product) to put down a grass killer at the base of trees to provide clearance for the trunk?

Put down black visqueen. The grass will die in a couple days

Just use Roundup. Roundup primarily works when absorbed through the leaves.

It depends on the Roundup. If it is the kind that only kills weeds then maybe

I've used roundup around my trees for 25 years. It's never been an issue

This is accurate. Just for kicks, I get cardboard and tape it to the tree.

How big is the tree? I doubt the grass is really competing with it at all unless it’s a very small one.
