From what I could read about Pope he was very selective in who he offered locally because if things don't work out and he has to send the locals packing-well that makes the delicate above paragraph folks testy.

But at the end of the day recruiting is about the roster and from what I could tell and see Pope's roster was trending to better and better until he bolted for Kentucky. Where they came from was not an issue to this fan. It appeared to me that Pope understood his recruiting base well - but he seemed loathe to me to be saddled with local kids who were not able to contribute to team success. In the old days if BYU was getting desperate for bodies that local/LDS pool was one where they took chances on kids who might be a great shooter but potentially didn't have the athletic ability to do it at the next level but nobody knew until the kid gets there. IMO, Pope was not interested in the drama with the Women of Srbrnca sounding local AAU shrillers so he was only going to go hard after local kids he was sure would not put him in that predicament.
