Sports like running, cycling or swimming involve building up work outs til you taper off to be fresh for the important meets.
You only have so much you can taper.
Yet for track and field at an elite T&F program you are ultimately aiming for nationals to place well there. So that is your ultimate taper. It is even more complicated for those who want compete in the US Olympic Trials.
So you need times that make you eligible for nationals throughout the season.
To get there you have to be ready to finish in top twelve in each regional as nationals only allows for 24 participants in each event.
So you have to ready two weeks earlier and then two weeks later.
This is where coaching and monitoring rest is so important.
