Took the fam to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes last night. 7.5/10.
I LOVE the Planet of the Apes movies. The Original series, the New ones...even the TV show and Animated series... Love them...(Not that freaking terrible Tim Burton trash!)

As per the usual with the newest entries into the series, the effects are amazing. They apes look real, show emotion, etc... Its amazing what they can do these days.
The movie was ok to good. Not great, but not bad at all.
It takes place well after the Caesar Trilogy so none of the previous characters are featured (outside some very brief expositional scenes right at the start).

It feels like a "side quest" type movie within the Planet of the Apes universe. Reminds me of Star Trek: Beyond, or the Mandalorian in that way. It didn't feel like it was building the main narrative, or moving the world forward.
It was a fine and mildly interesting adventure in the much larger, but largely unexplored, world.
It seems like a very loose re-imagining of "Battle for the Planet of the Apes." It shares a few themes and plot ideas, but without as clear or large an impact to the world.
The pace is a little slow at times. It doesn't quite "drag" but it isn't always moving either.
If you are a Planet of the Apes fan, it is absolutely one you want to see in theaters. It is better than the Tim Burton trash, and is a clear "middle of the pack" entry in the overall series.
If you liked the newer movies, it is worth seeing, but it a clear step down from those. Might want to wait for a $5 Tuesday or streaming.
If you've never seen the other movies, this might be a bit confusing, but they aren't strictly "necessary."
If you didn't like the others... You still might like this. It is very different. It is much more adventure and action, and much less social commentary. It does bring up some interesting questions, but not as many or as challenging as the previous films.
On that note, it does have one awkward shoehorned "woke" moment that is vague enough that most kids won't even notice. It isn't important to the plot, or characters or...well anything...
It is a bit scary/violent so be careful with any younger kids. 11-12 is probably the low age range depending on the individual.
No sex or nudity. Very little language.
As a family, we really enjoyed it. Half my kids have seen some or most of the previous movies. The other half still enjoyed it and really want to see the other movies now.
