Defying Gravity is great and it had at least one other song I thought was decent. Obviously not close ro the level of Les Mis in any regard.

The path to production is odd:

"I should write a weird book, featuring rape and beastiality, justifying the evil witch in that old movie."

"I should make a musical about racism out of that weird book featuring rape and beastiality."

"We should make a movie out of that musical."

The last one makes sense to me; the first two don't. But they made other people rich, so . . .
