I don't see nearly as much value in using NIL to lure HS talent. Especially if you can't "lock in" that talent for more than a year. It's rare to get a freshman to produce on the field whether or not they are highly touted. And if they do produce then they will absolutely go into the portal with that production to lever even more NIL out of the market. And what about the NIL you pay for in HS talent that simply doesn't pan out? What a waste!
Therefore it's much wiser to pay for talent that is proven. It may cost you a bit more (maybe not), but you are more likely to know what you are paying for. That is especially true for proven talent already on your roster. Retention is where NIL is going to be most optimally spent.
