staff together and the right players together. Some have compared “incorrectly” KY to Pope in recruiting and staffing.
Let’s NOT forget that Pope can recruit any player and coach without vetting them first, as to being admitted.
KY has to identify coaches and players who are willing to abide by the HC. Players are not only required to uphold the HC but have a higher academic requirement than those at UK for entrance.
Vetting at BYU takes time. This is a vital part of analyzing potential recruits before signing them. Coaches have to be interviewed, which takes time. And some potential coaches are still on staff with other teams.
BYU doesn’t have the deep pockets other universities have, which includes UK to secure commitments. One recruit at UK mentioned the NIL deal offered him was “insane.” Louisville signed AK to $600m realizing he will sit out this coming year.
KY is upfront with his players, he won’t blow smoke up their noses! He wants each to know their roles and potential. Possible reason why some previously associated with BYU are now looking and committing elsewhere? They want more minutes and meaningful roles, that may not be there, based on scouting reports and film.
The season isn’t starting tomorrow and there are still very qualified recruits in the portal, overseas and elsewhere.
Give KY time! His chair isn’t even warm yet. He has some great coaches already, who like himself are working tireless hours in scouring every possible place for the right players, who will fit into BYU. The support staff he has and continues to build is amazing! Who would have thought an assistant AD would come to be to be a Chief of Staff to handle NIL, personnel including players giving KY more time to recruit, coach and meet donors.
Be patient… if you were starting a new job in a new company as the head of a department, how quickly would it take you to transform the department into your department? You would first need to understand the pulse, analyze your personnel and then try to upgrade personnel and procedures within the company’s policies and political environment.
