in place before they begin building. They won't take out a loan. For better or worse, this is how BYU operates. Lately, this has been quite the advantage for BYU. Other schools, like the University of Utah, have so much debt that they are paying about $20 million a year just in servicing their debt. BYU's approach allows us to use our money on other avenues instead of paying interest. I for one am fine with BYU taking the approach they do. Would it be cool to have a brand new stadium with nice luxury boxes, better press boxes, better locker room, etc? Yes, it would be cool. But if we can use that extra money not being spent on debt service on things like better coaches salary, more support staff, better recruiting, etc, then I'm all for that.
We are going to see several of the former Pac12 schools, like Cal, really struggle going forward to try and service their debt load. Do we want to be in that kind of a bind?
