A guy who knocks up his high school girlfriend, leaves town to play baseball, hooks up with a female assassin, never returns home to raise his kid, becomes a major league star, hooks up with more evil women who ruin his baseball performance, then finally ends up with his high school sweetheart and her 16-year-old son who was raised without a dad.

And just to drive it home, the final scene is Robert Redford showing perfect form as he plays catch with his son. His son throws the ball like a kid who never had a dad teach him how to throw a ball. Chills.
