Okay, I'm back. More from camp
Cody Hoffman, a freshman from Del Norte High School in California, looks like a playmaker. He is listed at a legitimate 6-4, and looks like someone who could contribute soon.
The WR corps is very tall collectively, and I don't expect it to be a weak spot this season.
Tui Chrichton is a very big boy.
Riley Nelson threw some good passes in drills, but threw some bad ones as well. First day, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on him.
Max Hall looked very crisp in drills, but wasn't as impressive during the scrimmage. Some of it seemed to be just getting used to his receivers.
Steven Covey looked good in drills, and I think he is in the right position at wide receiver. He laid out for a nice catch during offensive drills, and looks to be a dependable receiver for Hall. It will be interesting to see how much he is able to contribute. I didn't notice him much in the scrimmage, but I think he will get some time this year.
The defense jumped offsides quite a bit in drills, but that was countered with a few false starts by the offense during the scrimmage. Can't expect perfection on the first day of camp.
Brendan Gaskins completed a very nice pass to Tucker Lamb in a light scrimmage for a 20 or so yard gain.
Robbie Buckner was running with the first team, and I should have a story on him on Monday.
Pendleton still seems to be lacking the aggressiveness and killer instinct that could set him apart. He definitely has all the physical tools to be a defensive playmaker.
Since Rich sat out parts of practice, Shiloh Teo was running with the first team at safety.
Malosi Teo also looked good. He caught a little swing pass out of the back field and beat everyone to the end and cut up field before they called him back. Hope he keeps that up.
I had the chance to meet Braden Brown's Dad. He has another son who is playing quarterback for timpview right now. Crowton offered him preferred walkon at LSU, and Utah wants him to be a full time DE, as they see him as the next Paul Kruger. He has some BYU interest, but it sounds like he wants to play quarterback. Anybody know more about him? 6-5, 210
Mason Higham, 6-4, 241 lb DE (freshman) looks very physical. Clubbed an OL over the head in a drill, but I didn't catch who it was.
Vic Soto looks very athletic for a D-Lineman, and I think he finally found the right position. He is extremely physical as well.
Russ Tialivea looks small.
Terrence Brown is huge, and is very strong. Seems to have great feet, and knows what he's doing.
Braden Hansen also has very good feet.
Ryan Freeman looked a step slow in drills.
Corby Eason got beat several times.
Jacobson looks great, and the mission rust doesn't look to be a problem. Beat Eason w/ good handfighting in a passing drill near the end zone. Touchdown.
In the same drill, Luke Ashworth made a great catch in the endzone, ripping the ball away from Garrett Nicholson. Luke has great hands.
Pendleton had a pass break-up in the scrimmage that fired up the defense, and stopped the offense short on their drive.
Aguirre and Logan were both running with the second team.
Jeff Bell had a big sack in the scrimmage.
For the most part Hall and Chambers had a hard time hooking up.
Malosi Teo is very quick to the hole.
Unga looks slimmer and quicker. Definitely 100%
Jray Galea'i had a good stop over the middle to end the scrimmage.
That's it for day one. During the fall semester I will be covering football, but for the DU website. I will be maintaining a blog, and posting video highlights, audio and video interviews, and 10-15 min podcasts very frequently on the blog. I will let you know what the url is as soon as it is up and running. My final stories for this semester should run on monday. I have very much appreciated your feedback and readership. I hope that you will continue to follow my blog when it is up(this will definitely happen soon, as they have hired me to do it during fall semester.)I will try to get you the insight and storylines that may not make it into the mainstream news. If any of you have contacts in the industry, please let me know as I am trying to set up an internship next summer. Thanks again,

Seth
