Recent encounter with a current 'u' student

So I've got some friends who fly in and this student calls me to get information about where and when they'll be in so he can be there to meet them too.

He sees the BYU parking stickers on my car when we're getting out of the car when they follow us some place to grab some food. As he sees the stickers he asks, "Do you go to BYU?" I answer that I do and he gets this "Oooooh" like he just owned me or something.

"Why? Do you go to the 'u'?"

"Yeah I do." From there the conversation turns into me saying, well hey that is cool what are you studying, etc and really goes nowhere after that.

Keep in mind this fellow is an overweight Latino originally from Panama meaning he probably doesn't care too much about football or basketball or whatever. Point remains that despite the fact that he really isn't too invested in the success of the teams (another reason I know - he met his fiancee online. How much time does THAT crowd have to pay attention to sports?), or whatever and that he's not a die hard, but as an ALUF that my going to BYU is somehow odd or that it is supposed to be a bad thing.

My stance as far as the 'u' goes is that I don't see myself in any circumstances attending the 'u', but in no way does that make it bad on its own merit alone. Pres. Hinckley and the church leadership counseled the Youth that they further their education - not that it had to come from BYU or whatever.

Where I am bothered though is that he learned this stigma. It wasn't acquired by upbringing or anything like that.

Most BYU students couldn't care less about the yewts except when our football or men's basketball team plays against them, then they check out of the rivalry for the rest of the year. Why is it that the students up at the 'u' can't seem to leave BYU alone regardless of whether they care about sports or not?

Is it really that much about the Y up on the hill @ the 'u' even if you aren't one of their dimwitted sports fans?

For that reason alone the yewts could win every championship known to man from now until the end of days and they'd still always be little brother because they act like it.
