Another bit or "lore"
Here's another item to add to the "lore", although maybe a little less known by the average fan. For those of us involved with the football program in the early to mid 80's the rivalry took on another nickname. It was called the "Banana Bowl". At what would have been his first game in Salt Lake as a defensive coach for BYU, Ken Schmidt came walking out of the locker room for pre-game warm up and was promptly hit in the side of the head by a banana, knocking his glasses off. Coach Schmidt, like Norm Chou, was a Utah alum. All it took was that one banana to turn whatever red blood remained in his veins true blue. Coach Schmidt was known back then to have the occasional choice few words to share, and after being beaned with the banana he shared them with the crowd in the general direction where it came from. From then on, until he retired, he joked that the Utes generally had nothing big to play for and the BYU game was their bowl, hence the "Banana Bowl". There were even "Banana Bowl" T-shirts that the defensive players could earn with a caricature of Coach Schmidt getting hit by a banana, glasses flying. I still have mine! It's great! In fact, I can't say for sure but it would not surprise me if Coach Whitt himself once had a "Banana Bowl" shirt under his pads.
