Why not?
He interview for both and got offered both. One was where he went to school, one was where he had spent his last decade plus. His family has strong ties to both and some of his family want him to go to both. In the end he chose Utah and Utah got their first choice, but both schools were in the picture for him.

Besides that, why wouldn't he? He interview with Tennessee as well. It never hurts to see what others offer and weigh your options
