It was the automatic bowl for the winner of the WAC Championship game for a couple of seasons so BYU got in based on that. BYU had already been snubbed by the existing version of the BCS and NY6 bowl group. That being said, that BYU team probably gets into the current NY6 game.

However, did you know that they had already offered the Fiesta Bowl to BYU. Lavell was in Indianapolis in a taxi driving to the press conference announcing the game when they decided to give it to another team (Penn State I think). Lavell went to the airport and bought his own ticket home.
