Across the USA a combination of understandable factors have merged to create a terribly murky legal and policy situation. On many campuses the cry of assault is sufficient to get a male student expelled. Is that justice? I don't think so. Is it justice to expel both and allow the legal process to play out? Not really either. So what do you do?
Getting policy right is hard, if not impossible. But we ought to get the principles right. I think the proper principles, as far as BYU status is concerned are reflected in the church's doctrine - that of personal accountability and responsibility. If not this principle then what other principle can there be?
