Last night I read in Steve Young's autobiography about this "flea-flicker" play to win the 1983 Holiday Bowl:
Holmgren and Chow called the play as time was running out and BYU was behind. The play worked and BYU won. Young says that LaVell later told Chow and Holmgren, "That was one of the the dumbest calls I've ever seen. But it was brilliant because it worked."
I don't think it was even in the play book. It was just a play that the offense would do when they were goofing around. The coaches had to remind Steve the play they were talking about and Young had to remind Stinnett. When Young told the o-line guys about the play they apparently reacted something like, "You've got to be kidding." I think today that LaVell would say Thursday's fake punt totally eclipsed the Holiday Bowl flea-flicker for dumbness.
