I thought the DB was closing fast too. In the time it woulda taken him
to gather the ball (like he SHOULD HAVE DONE), that DB woulda been nearly upon him. But assuming he were smart enough (hmmm.) he could've gotten outa bounds & taken hardly anything off the clock. Same with the pass to the other side that next play.
