I'm not sure UCLA is a bad example. Their offense is pretty good, they're just
poorly coached on D. I don't think they have a bad scheme, they just don't have the right players and the right coaches in general.

The only difference between up tempo schemes and slow schemes is just the tempo and conditioning. You either have O-linemen that can block or you don't. You have WRs that can make catches or you don't. A good player will perform well in a decent scheme and have challenges in a terrible one.
