One of the criteria is conference champion, so it'd be very, very difficult to
land in the Top 4. Things had to fall just right for BYU to be #1 in 1984. It's worse now. Not impossible, but very, very difficult even at 12-0.
For sure, BYU would need at least 2-3 of their P5 wins to be against eventual conference champions. Even then, it's easy to write off early season wins. I hate to say it, but the best help would be if Utah was 11-0 (and ranked in the top 2-3) going into that final game.

No. Under the current system BYU needs at least two great back to back seasons and maybe even three.
