Here's an example.  In Rome, the 24-hour metro pass was cash only.  Also street food, bottles of water, smaller gift shops, etc.  I would take a card without foreign transaction fees, but still have some cash available.

Get Euros at ATM's or from you bank ahead of time.  Only exchange US$ to Euros as last resort.  The exchange rate/fees give you the worst value.
