I am about as cynical as they come, but do you really think that our political leaders, Dem or Rep, aren't trying to make the best decisions for the long run for the nation/state? Yes, the best result will likely result in re-election, but do you really think that Pres. Trump or Gov. Newsom or any other leader doesn't care if tens of thousands die? Or if their policy decisions turn out to ruin the economy? I don't trust most leaders, either, and don't necessarily believe everything they do is the right thing to do, but even they have some level of concern and sympathy for the suffering (in many different areas of life) of their constituents? Their own political philosophies will certainly influence what they decide, but ultimately to suggest that their only concern is reelection is a bit harsh, don't you think? Besides, what policy enactments would be the ones that would help in re-election? Nobody knows.
