It keeps dirt out of the clear coat and makes it slightly harder.. but not much.
The 'protect the paint from scratches' is the #1 myth of ceramic coating. It will keep contaminants out of the paint, and it will be more UV resistant, and it makes washing the car easier (bird droppings, tar, rain spots.. etc).

But it will still scratch just the same.

Using an automatic car wash is a HUGE no-no when it comes to ceramic coating. You are basically just removing the coating slightly each time. (every ceramic care guide says the same thing... wash ever 2 weeks, by hand, 2 bucket method).

You can get the EXACT same protection from off the shelf products you apply yourself for a fraction of the cost.
