There's also the element of where they line up.
When two of the OL are lined up wide, do the DL line up wide with them to take on the blocker?

It's easy to say they only rushed 2 - reality is that splitting out a pair of OL meant that the DL wasn't sure what they were doing either - and were sometimes lining up with the split out OL. So the effect was to only have a pair of DL even close enough to rush. But what's the consequence of having a pair of WR out wide behind a big OL blocker if you've only got one DB covering that side and the safety sitting deep and the DL doesn't slide out? So the DL would slide out too.

I understand it not being something they could adjust to mid-drive, because it required adjustments by multiple position groups to make sure everyone was covered.

Nice gimmick that got Texas State a TD, in the end. But not sustainable once the defense had a chance to get to the sideline and talk things through with coaches to adjust.
