As I chip in for these situations, I always have the sad feeling that it is only a dent to help them through the initial hit of burial and other expenses, and maybe pay the bills while they mourn and start the healing process, but their financial "new normal" afterwards becomes a real struggle in perpetuity once the donations and dinners stop.
