Better balance and more contact with the lifting surface.
The slippers have tons of traction.

Gym shoes are absolutely the worst to squat and deadlift with. They aren't super stable, mostly because of the material they are made from. Powerlifting shoes, slippers (for deadlifts), and bare feet are the best options (in that order) in my opinion.
