Yeah that's how they work. Depending on the car they may use some combination of miles driven, elapsed time, type of
driving (stop and go vs highway), etc. You have to reset it manually. It doesn't actually sample the oil.

Sounds like a pre-programmed thing- not an actual oil condition monitor.
