A related but slightly different take. There has always been a
lot of corruption in all institutions. For sure the non scandalous kind where groups of people are dishonest on a small scale for their own benefit and where organizations forget what they are supposed to stand for and whom they serve.

Of course the more scandalous corruption takes place as well and after Watergate the public is keenly aware of this potential and is now rather distrustful of our institutions.

I think what is regrettably different now is the politicization of just about everything in public life. This wasn’t always do. And it will be hard to reverse. And it makes all of us distrustful of others because we’ve forgotten what we have in common.
