The Wasatch Front in Utah is one that's currently pretty expensive. Newer build townhomes are much nicer than those 50+ year old houses, and a lot bigger, but even the old build houses are expensive. I've been looking for a smaller 1950's-1980's house that hasn't been remodeled on a small lot (fixer upper), and you pretty much need $400K+ to get one in a decent neighborhood and that doesn't need major structural work. The housing market has gone through ebbs and flows of affordability, but right now seems to be on the more expensive end of the cycle.
