and they haven't said what they're doing yet. There are still a number of good guys we're not talking about.
I think NIL will change within the next 2-3 years because it's too chaotic and destructive in present form. College fandom is built a lot around the allusion of school loyalty and team play. NIL blows that up and will diminish the joy for many fans. They may not entirely drop out but many will watch a lot more games on cable or streaming than make the effort to go to the arena or stadium.
That effort, for me, is motivated to be there live to see and cheer my heroes. Well, they're not exactly my heroes anymore; they're hired mercenaries, which takes away the magic. I quit following pro sports altogether because of the same thing.
I don't blame the kids for taking the money, though I don't necessarily think they earn it. Basketball is particularly craven because there are so many fewer team members and all seem to be getting a cut. With football, most get nothing, or relatively insignificant amounts, so there is still some sense of amateurism.
I think you'll see an increase in people booing players when they screw up, and that may be fair since they're getting paid to perform at a certain level. They're not just kids out there giving their all for the alma mater.
