I think there is lots of excitement about the potential for this next year's BYU basketball team, but cautious optimism we'll be able to put a competitive team on the floor.
I can think of about 8 to 10 glowing statements in the last three weeks about what is happening behind the scenes - "Just wait!" and "You'll be amazed!"
Fan patience has a fairly short shelf life, depending on the fan. I think fans were pretty pleased with the quick action with re-adding Hall and Saunders, getting Kozlowski committed, and also solidifying the place of other players (Baker, Waterman, Traore, Knell, etc.) - but with 4-5 roster spots left, what comes next?
Since the transfer portal is basically closed, and players are committing to other institutions right and left, some of us might feel a little anxious about the next steps. With the quick offers out to high-level 4- and 5-star players in next year's HS class, it might be that KY and his staff will just keep roster spots open to hopefully fill with a strong incoming HS class, and just surf the difficulties that come for next season with a limited roster. Who knows? Clearly, they are talking about some recruiting targets.
However, I think fans like to see the staff make layups:
* Atiki - a decent backup big - seems like a layup to keep him.
* Isaac Davis - a solid 3-star prospect with a nice upside - seems like a layup to keep him.
We can talk about getting recruits who are three-pointers or half-court shots (metaphor), but, missing layups loses games. And programs. I think the anxiety is folks are wondering if we might be missing a couple layups in the search for "bigger shots." I hope it turns out well, so we'll see what the next month brings.
