we found a cheap 2-bedroom apartment with a clothes washer and kitchen. Saved a ton of money. Stayed in a residential area and had a fantastic view of the lake and mountains. In Thun, we swam in the Aare River with the locals (it's very cold, but fun!) and watch locals surf in and tight rope across the river from the quaint wooden pedestrian bridges. Also visited Thun Castle.

We had to drive to Lauterbrunnen, which is about 40 minutes away. But, the drive is BEAUTIFUL, right along the lake with great mountain views. There is a huge parking garage right at the train station that takes you up to Murren. Bern, Murten, and Lucerne are also easy driving distance from Thun.

Also, lots of relatively inexpensive and good food at Lidl and Coop supermarkets which are easy and convenient if you are driving.
