This is the Utes the last 5 years in basketball.
2010-11 13-18
2011-12 6-25
2012-13 15-18
2013-14 21–12 NIT First Round
2014-15 7–2
This is BYU the last 5 years:
2010–2011 32–5 (13th in nation) NCAA Sweet Sixteen (3 seed)
2011–2012 26-9 NCAA Second Round (14 seed)
2012–2013 24-12 NIT Semifinals (3 seed)
2013-2014 23-12 NCAA Second Round (10 seed)
2014-15 9-3
Utah likely loses Poetl and Wright next season, which should set them back. I don't see their pipeline as stronger than BYU's.
In football, here are the Utes:
2010 10-3
2011 8-5
2012 5-7
2013 5-7
2014 9-4
(37 wins)
And BYU:
2010 7-6
2011 10-3
2012 8-5
2013 8-5
2014 8-4
(41 wins)
This also happens to coincide with a dip in BYU football and head to head losses. Either way, I don't see the Utes as some juggernaut elite program materially ahead of BYU. Taysom is back next season with most of the Oline. There's no reason to panic because Utah has an up year in both sports
