Why? My compressed blu rays at 1080 p look fantastic.
I've done a ton of tests where I get up next to the screen and pixel peep. No reason to have a file size that big.

On the subtitles page, do a foreign audio search and have the subs burned in

I wish the foreign audio scan didn't add so much time.

About 1.5 GB per DVD, about 6 GB per Blue Ray. I'd get a 1 TB drive so you have

I have mine down to 600MB per DVD and 2.5 GB per Bluray.

I used to do that, but I like the high quality

I wouldn't get less than a 2 TB if it were me.

Any old hard drive will work fine. No need for NAS unless you're not hooking it

If you're using it with Plex, with the intent of sharing, not just any ol' HD

Haven't had any complaints from my Plex friends on my plain ol' WD drive

You won't either--until your hard drive crashes

NAS has nothing to do with quality or reliability of the drive

question: what do you do to rip the DVD of a TV series?

I still use MakeMKV for the TV series.

What do you use to play MKV files? My tv wont so I have to convert them to

The only thing I know of that does MKVs natively is the WD TV Live

As a quick followup, Roku 3 says that it can do native MKVs, but the truth is

I just download on a thumb drive and plug it into my tv. I'm ghetto like that.

I see. The WD TV Live has a USB port, so you could plug it into your TV and do

MKV won't work if you want to put the movie files on any devices though
BYUCoug11
4/19/15 11:55am
It will still work, you just have to down the quality.

Most devices don't natively play MKV files. It's a format issue, not quality
BYUCoug11
4/19/15 1:53pm
most will through Plex. if not using Plex vlc works on devices too.

BTW I didn't say they would natively.

Plex will transcode a lot of different filetypes. What if you're not going to

1-2 GB for a DVD. 4-6 for a blu ray.
