DISCLAIMER: Of course I get that he's a freshman. A lot of this will work itself out.
First, 5 good:
- He's a gun slinger. Flicks the ball down field with ease.
- Looks the defense off more than just "occasionally."
- Keeps his eyes downfield.
- Tall and lanky... Reminds me of Detmer.
- Good touch on the short pass. This has been a trip up for BYU in recent years, I feel.
Now... 5 improvement:
- His hands need to grow. Looked like the ball came out a little too high a few times. Shouldn't be a problem though, he's 15.
- Footwork is a little trippy. Needs to clean up 3-step and 5-step drop. Roll out was actually okay, needs more speed though.
- Skinny. Would like to see him at LEAST 20 lean pounds of muscle heavier. That frame won't hold up even with the best line (see Chuckie Keaton, USU).
- Being a 6'2" freshman, his height might be more of a liability right now... looks like he hunches a bit, and not just because he's under center. Straighten up that posture, son. It's an asset.
Again. Most of this will smooth out with age. Original question was, "is he a BYU QB?"
Yes. Tossing my name in the ring with Mrs_BigD. If he stays healthy, lives right, and keeps his grades up, yes he can do it. Question now is when/if he goes on a mission. Mangum is set to run the offense in '16 (so), '17 (jr), '18 (sr). If he does what Heaps did and graduates early '18, goes through Spring Ball '18 and then does a Mangum-esque mission timing-wise, we don't see him until '20, perhaps '21 depending on who fills in post-Mangum era. If he foregoes a mission, he will compete for the starting job once Mangum graduates.
Who fills the gap in the meantime?
