it's not like the scheme is the problem. there are plenty of plays that work and
would be considered "imaginative".

the issue his play calling more than anything. it's maddening to watch a wonderfully called drive, them score easily, then the next three make you scratch your head. the last ND game is a good example. go right down the field running stuff that we don't normally see. then we don't see it again, and he goes right back to the basic stuff. the second (i think it was the second) UCLA drive is another example. i'm talking to my brother saying that they can't stop us. well, they couldn't. but Bob could. same story. he puckers up and goes back to the basic stuff that better teams beat with ease.
