This year is different because it's the first year installing this and it was going to be new to whoever they chose.
It's only in recent years that underclassmen QBs in college started getting significant playing time. In traditional pro style offenses like BYU of the 80s and 90s most guys didn't start until they were upper class-men. West Coast systems are all about timing and footwork and it takes a couple years to master for most guys. I think it takes alot of reps for QBs and WRs to be in sync on those option routes. With the rise of up tempo spread offenses we started to see more frosh come into college and excel early. It's because everything was simplified and they are not being asked to do as much mentally. Just be an athlete. Throw hard. Run fast. Read option. From pop warner through college, teams were no longer looking for specific QB types. They just started putting the best athlete on the field at QB. You see alot of those guys struggle when they get to the pros because they can't handle the traditional QB duties that are asked of them. Once we get the system established it should be smooth transitions. Sr graduates and someone who has been practicing in the system for a few years steps in to replace him for a couple years. We just need to get the pipeline going. We knew this would be a transition year with the new staff.
Having said all that, Taysom was never a great passer even under previous OCs. We all just fell in love with his running ability.
